How does the Tracy and Wiersema model fit into the Balanced Scorecard framework? The model basically says that a company has a competitive advantage in Innovation, Customer Intimacy, or Operational Excellence. They can be good at several of these things, but only really differentiating in one of them.

The best way to think of Tracey and Wiersma is to use them as a framework for modeling the internal process perspective. By thinking about innovation, customer intimacy, and operational excellence, you get away from the default organizational chart model in the internal perspective. This helps drive more strategic (and less operational) discussions in the map development and review process.
